Unity Walk

During the month of June, the city of Manhattan organized a number of events to celebrate Juneteenth. I was sent to cover the Unity Walk that started in Longs Park and ended in Douglass Park. After the walk I interviewed two people on their experience and thoughts on the event. After that, I walked around some more, chatted with vendors and tried to really get a feel on the event. Back in the office, I listened to my interviews and wrote two broadcast stories. Each story has 2 soundbites. I also wrote an online version that had more details on the event, then added pictures and audio to it.

Annual Active Violence Training

USD 383 holds an annual active violence training to ensure emergency personnel are prepared for a variety of possible scenarios. I was in charge of attending the demonstration, take pictures, and interview people. This specific scenario was an active shooter threat and we watched as the first responders navigated the situation. After the demonstration was over, we had a chance to interview a person from each department; RCPD, MFD and Riley County EMS. I went back to the office to write two broadcast stories and then posted an online version on the website.

MATC´s Project Progress

The Manhattan Area Technical College (MATC) is currently under renovation and is expected to have new facilities and equipment available to student by fall of 2024. I was sent to the MATC location to take pictures of the progress. Then, I had to listen to an audio interview with MATC´s President Jim Genandt. From the interview I pulled 4 soundbites and wrote two broadcast stories to be voiced the next morning.

Mandela Washington Fellows at
K-State

K-State´s Staley School of Leadership held the annual Mandela Washington Fellows conference this summer. Twenty-five leaders from sub-Saharan Africa took part of a 6-week leadership program. I was in charge of going to the opening ceremony and interview two people, with one of those being one of the leaders. Everybody was so nice and willing to help, I ended up interviewing five people. When I went back to the office, I had enough material to write more than a couple broadcast stories. Once that was done, I started working on the website story. I wanted to make sure everyone got a chance to shine, so I included at least once soundbite from each of the interviewees.
